Card Reader: A device that allows the transfer of data directly from the removable memory card of a digital camera to the computer without the need to connect the camera to a computer.

Calibration: The proper alignment of your digital photography equipment to a standard measure to create reliable output for all your digital prints and media.

CCD-Charged Coupled Device: A light-sensitive chip used to capture images in digital cameras, video cameras, and other devices. In digital cameras, the CCD is what converts light into electrical current, which is then translated into your digital image.

Chroma: Refers to the purity of color in a digital image. The less gray, white, or black a color has in it, the more pure and vivid it will appear. Also refered to as saturation.

CMY: The three colors that are used to make all other colors. Cyan, Magenta and Yellow.

CMYK: The four colors used by many digital photo-quality printers Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black.

Collection: The group of digital images you have uploaded and stored in a photo album on Shutterfly.

Compact Flash: A storage card found in digital cameras that allows easy transfer of images to your computer, generally used in conjunction with a USB or PCMCIA Card adapter.

Compression: Storing data in a format that reduces the file size. This is not always a good method of storing digital photos, because some compression methods sacrifice image quality (in the form of artifacts) for smaller file sizes.(see Artifacts)

Contrast: Contrast is the difference between the brightest bright and the darkest dark in your digital photo. If your digital photos have too much contrast it will cause a loss of delicate shadings and shadows. Whereas too little contrast leaves your photos muddy.

Cyan One of the three colors that are used to make all other colors. A blue-green subtractive primary color that absorbs red and transmits blue-green
