Staff Software Engineer - Infrastructure

Responsibilities:

  • Design distributed system and software architectures that are scalable, available, manageable, and cost-effective.
  • Develop robust infrastructure software that is multi-threaded, efficient, minimizes contention, and effectively utilizes shared resources.
  • Develop and conduct load testing to understand and optimize system performance and scalability.
  • Design and develop platform software that provides common services to other application development groups: e.g. access to databases, messaging, caching, monitoring, logging, etc.
  • Performance tune Tomcat configuration, Java memory and thread utilization, database connection and SQL, cache utilization, messaging, and other infrastructure systems.
  • Collaborate with Internet Operations on system design, capacity planning, monitoring, engineering escalation and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with Release and QA on deployment and testing.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of infrastructure software and systems development, mostly in Java.
  • Strong object-oriented design and Java coding skills; able to design efficient database schema and queries; experience developing software that minimizes latency.
  • Experience redesigning and migrating existing software to new software platforms.
  • Experience leading infrastructure projects from concept to deployment; experience with performance tuning and improving existing infrastructure software.
  • Experience designing scalable and cost-effective Internet-based distributed systems – load balancing, fail-over, distributed caching, messaging, database scaling (e.g. sharding).
  • Desire and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, growing, dynamic environment
  • BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent commercial experience.

Desirable:

  • Production experience with the use of systems and software packages: e.g. MemCached, SQUID, Coherence, Terracotta, Hibernate, and JGroups.
  • Production experience with MySQL and other database technologies.
  • Production experience with virtualization technologies.
