Sr. Manager, Network Engineering

This position will be responsible for the production and corporate networks, both domestic and international. The Network Engineering department manages transit and connectivity for our multiple datacenters, manufacturing facilities and carrier exchanges. The successful candidate is hands-on and principally responsible for architecture, capacity planning, deployment and network support.
You will manage the Network Engineering department, structuring projects and prioritizing activities for your staff engineers. Your sound judgment will be leveraged on a daily basis, making decisions that directly impact availability and uptime for www.shutterfly.com. You are a seasoned network engineer that is able to consider multiple facets of any problem set, weighing risk, cost, time and resources to guide you.
You’ve also had experience managing and growing people—you know how to inspire and leverage your resources in a high output and very rapid growth post-IPO company. You burn with the righteous fire to build indestructible infrastructure and can build passion within your team to accomplish departmental and corporate objectives of excellence.
Responsibilities:
Manage all network upgrade projects, network change control processes and on-call schedule. You will develop design, configuration and deployment standards as well as policies and procedures to improve departmental efficiencies in line with corporate objectives. You will help define and manage the network budget, as well as be the coordination point for multi-departmental projects. The network engineering department is the backbone for all operations, and as such, your approach is service oriented, setting realistic expectations for multifaceted projects, collaborating with others in the organization to accomplish large and far reaching deployments and implementations.
Key Skills and Experience:
- 10 years paid experience working in a 24×7 e-commerce website or similar, architecting network infrastructure and supporting large scale networks
- In-depth knowledge of enterprise routing and switching, specifically Cisco IOS 12.2 experience on the 65xx platform
- Comprehensive understanding of TCP/IP fundamentals and theory, including application load balancing, F5 LB experience a plus
- Ability to establish and maintain external peering via BGP, traffic shaping and route redistribution
- BGP, EIGRP, VRRP, VRRPE, STP, HSRP and OSPF routing experience
- Strong knowledge of non-stop network environments, including hitless upgrades, failover (at both layer 2 and layer 3)
- Familiar with use and configuration of Cisco FWSM and VPN concentrators
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and solve problems quickly and efficiently
- Work with external parties (SAS70; PCI) to conduct audits and develop plans for addressing audit recommendations
- Develop network designs to ensure compliance with security best practices
- Experience managing intrusion detection/prevention systems
- Ability to perform holistic network audits to identify opportunities for improvement, evaluate and recommend a specific solution, and then implement them in a timely fashion
- Reasonable Unix administration knowledge – should be proficient developing and supporting a Unix environment
- Demonstrated ability to build robust monitoring, alerting, trending and traffic flow analysis platforms primarily using open source technologies
- Perl development experience a plus
- In depth understanding of how routers and switches actually work and how to manipulate
- Thrive on optimization, performance improvements and a good benchmarking bake off
- Able to contribute to the antics, shenanigans and the occasional rubber band war
- Must be willing to work varied schedules, including shared on-call responsibilities
